Fire from an Artesian Well. A fire was caused at Joplinville, near Watertown, (N. Y.) last week, by the ignition of gas from an artesian well in progress of boring. John Smith, the engineer, was badly burned. A large hole was cut in the flue, so as to let a body of water at immediately upon the hole, but it was thrown back with a force truly surprising, and the gas burnt above the water in a beautiful bright flame. Quilts were then saturated with salt and forced down, and the fire finally extinguished, after burning an hour and a half.
