Full Text

Extract of a Letter from Dantzick, October 14. The Situation of this once flourishing City is now really deplorable; Deprived of the Advantages the Inhabitants used to enjoy, oppressed by Numbers of Troops quartered upon them, subject to foreign Voice, and loaded with Taxes, they are to be pitied; but it is in vain to complain. The Prussian Monarch has taken Care to preserve this invaluable Place from the Fear of a Foe, but if he continues his present Proceedings he will effectually depopulate this City; and if he puts his Threats in Execution, of issuing an Order to prevent any Person emigrating from the City without his previous Leave, he will certainly make Himself a formidable Enemy, if ever the King of Poland should endeavour to regain his lost Dominions, which he certainly will, and it is expected soon. The Citizens have sent frequent Petitions to different Courts (especially to that of Great Britain) but nothing avails. Those Powers clearly have it not at Heart, or are afraid to draw upon themselves a powerful Enemy; so that the King of Prussia may enslave as many more Citizens as he has already, without their ever stirring to prevent it.

Event Details

The city of Dantzick is deprived of former advantages, oppressed by quartered troops, subject to foreign Voice, and loaded with taxes. The Prussian Monarch protects it from foes but risks depopulating it through proceedings and threats to restrict emigration without leave, potentially making him an enemy if the King of Poland regains lost dominions soon. Citizens' petitions to courts, especially Great Britain, have no effect due to other powers' indifference or fear.
