Union Candidate for Congress.

Gen. R. P. Buckland, who was placed in nomination at the Convention at Monroeville on Friday last, merits and will receive the most cordial support of the Union men of this District. Though we had anticipated and expected a different result, in the nomination of the unanimous choice of the delegates from Erie county, we shall yield the most cordial and hearty support to Gen. Buckland. He is well known to the people of this District, having in 1855-6 most ably represented a portion of it in the State Senate and having been in active military service for the past three years. Though largely engaged in business, he did not hesitate to make the sacrifice of patriotism and after being mainly instrumental in the organization of the 72d O. V. I. went with it to the field as Colonel. He has continued in active service ever since, having been promoted more than a year ago to Brigadier General, and for some time past commanding at Memphis.

Gen. Buckland is a man of excellent business qualifications, large ability, the most untiring industry and as faithful to the obligations of duty as any man living. He is the soul of honor, of incorruptible integrity and fully informed as to the needs and necessities of the time. He will make an able, efficient and most excellent member of Congress, one of whom the District and State may well be proud. Of his triumphant election we will not allow ourselves for one moment to doubt. That a man who has remained at home and done all he could to defeat the Union cause should be elected over one who has offered his life to his country and faced rebel bullets, would be a disgrace beyond words to express.

We hope there will be immediate and efficient organization of Union men through the District. If Gen. Buckland is not here to canvass the District: he is in the line of his duty, and should only therefore receive the more cordial and active support. If he should not speak to the loyal people, he is speaking by his act to rebels, and should only thereby be the more dear to the people at home. The District has been disgraced long enough by one who, lacking the patriotism to be an honest and loyal man, has not even the courage to range himself where he belongs, with the peace Democrats, or peace traitors of the North. When Hon. W. P. Noble is superseded by Gen. R. P. Buckland, the people of this District may well rejoice with exceeding joy.-Sandusky Register.
