IMPORTANT.

Just before our paper was put to press, we were politely favoured with the following Extract of a Letter from a gentleman at Fort Stoddert, dated 14th March, 1811.

"The rumours I allude to are, that a British fleet were a few days since at the Barrancas, and that a British force was on the point of occupying Pensacola and Mobile. Such was the impression at Pensacola. Considerable ammunition was landed at that place from on board the said supposed fleet—a great firing was kept up, both at Pensacola and the Barrancas; and this evening (March 13th,) we have heard the report of several very large guns, seemingly in or near the bay of Mobile."

"I am truly distressed with the apprehension, that Mobile may be taken possession of by the British, before any instructions will authorise our forces to attempt it."
