What is this article about?

A farmer responds to an article by 'Farmer,' calculating his current profits from 2,000 bushels of corn, 100 bushels of wheat, 15 hogs, and other goods at $695. He estimates an additional $365-$400 with a railroad to Chicago and more via the Mississippi and Wabash Railroad for direct Eastern market access, advocating for its construction.

Messrs. Editors:—In your last week's paper I saw an article headed "Figure Up," and signed "Farmer," which considerably interested me. At first I was somewhat surprised at "Farmer's" figures, and so concluded to do as he says—figure up a little. I shall have about 2,000 bushels of corn for sale the present season, and about 100 bushels of wheat, and 15 hogs, weighing at least 200 lbs. each—besides butter, eggs, chickens, turkeys, &c. Well, thought I, my corn will bring me from 20 to 25 cents per bushel, and my wheat—being first rate—about 75 cents per bushel; my pork, $4 per hundred pounds. I then counted up, to see what it would all come to.

2,000 bushels of corn, at 25 cts. per bushel...... $500
100 bushels of wheat, at 75 cts. per bushel...... 75
3,000 lbs of pork, at 4 cts. per lb.................. 120
Total. $695

Now, thought I, if we had a railroad connection with Chicago—to say nothing about a direct Eastern outlet, which of course would be much better, and which would be obtained in the Mississippi and Wabash Road—how much would these articles then bring me? After looking over the markets in several numbers of your paper, I concluded that I might safely calculate that my corn would bring me an advance of not less than 15 cents per bushel, my wheat about 25, and my pork at least $1 per hundred lbs. Now, what will all this amount to? Let us count it up and see.

15 cents per bushel on 2,000 bushels of corn... $300
25 cents per bushel on 100 bushels of wheat... 25
1 cent per lb on 3,000 lbs of pork....... 30
Total increase. $365

Besides all this, I concluded that the increase in the price of my butter, eggs, poultry, &c., would bring that sum up to $400. Then I thought if all this could be gained by a railroad connection with Chicago, how much more would be gained by the building of the Mississippi and Wabash Railroad—by which we would have a direct connection with all the great Eastern markets.

Main Argument

building a railroad to chicago would increase the writer's farm profits by at least $365 from main crops and meat, plus $35 from other goods, totaling around $400 more; the mississippi and wabash railroad would provide even greater benefits through direct eastern market access.
