Angier High Baseball Team Looks Forward With Hope

The high school baseball team representing Angier won out over Harnett county class A competition last year and went on to herald the county name in the North Carolina Class AA Finals against Clemons in a playoff which was held in the Buies Creek park, Taylor Field.

The Angier high team lost this series, but it proved that it had a swell ball club by doing the best in it's class that the Eastern half of the state had to offer.

This year, Coach Joe Langley thinks that he has another fine team; however, he admits that it is not the team that he had at Angier last season. Langley says that he expects his boys to get past the local competition which consists of LaFayette, Buies Creek and Lillington.

The coach laments over losing the majority of players that made up the former Eastern Champs, but he states that he has some capable replacements in most positions and two of the holdovers were stars on last year's team. These two boys, Jimmy Matthews and Roy Lee Earp, are the best hitters in the county according to their director.

Other lettermen in addition to the two mentioned above are Harold Partin, Ben Price, Talley Ennis, Dan Honeycutt, Wiley Altman and Hershel Young.

The Angier high squad is as follows:

Jimmy Long (1b) Soph.
Talley Ennis (1b) Sr.
Bobby Smith (1b) Fresh.
Ben Price (2b) Sr.
Carl Hamm (2b) Sr.
Graham Wimberly (2b) Fresh.
Jimmy Matthews (ss) Soph.
Bobby Partin (ss) Fresh.
Jimmy Pleasant (3b) Soph.
John Griffin (3b) Fresh.
Roy Lee Earp (of) Sr.
Jack Wommack (of) Fresh.
Wiley Altman (of) Sr.
Paul Carr (of) Fresh.
Billy Adams (of) Sr.
Harold Partin (p) Soph.
Hershel Young (p) Sr.
Sam Chissenhall (p) Fresh.
Jerry Howard (p) Fresh.
and John Gri

Ben Price, Jimmy Matthews, Roy Earp, and probably Dan Honeycutt will provide most of the plate-punch this season. The hurling will be led by sharp Sophomore Harold Partin and Hershel Young. Freshman Sam Chissenhall shows fine promise and will be useful this year.

Langley talks like he will have his team primed for their game with Lillington on Friday. He thinks that Lillington will have a strong team this season and will be the team to beat in class A play in Harnett.

The Friday game will be played on the Angier field; other games on the schedule will be—April 17, LaFayette at home; 20, Lillington, away; 24, Buies Creek, away; 27, Coats at home; May 1, Coats, away; 4, Erwin at home; 11, Erwin away.
