8-Hour Day, Overtime

Detroit, June 10.- Garage Employes Local 415, of the UAWA, has completed negotiations with the Cadillac-Oldsmobile company, (a GM branch), Cass avenue and York street.

Wage increases were granted ranging from $2.00 to $12.00 a week. The 40-hour week, with time and one half for work over eight hours in any one day, according to GM agreement, and a permanent committee of five workers, was recognized.

The following statement was issued by the officers of local 415, 6194 Hamilton avenue:

Another Step

"This agreement is only a step further in organizing the garage employes in Detroit. This particular kind of work demands skilled men but is the lowest paid of any automobile work in the city. The workers in this line have been, and in the majority of cases still are, working as high as 75 hours a week, for pay as low as 30 and 35 cents an hour.

"Our ultimate aim is to raise these workers to a higher standard of living so they will not have to work on their friends' or neighbors' cars at night to make a few extra dollars.

"Elimination of the alley chiseler is another step that will have to be taken to protect our members and also the garages that sign agreements with us.

Return 5 Men

"We have placed five members back on the job after they were fired for union activities in various shops in the city.

"Woodward Chevrolet is another shop that has recognized the union and given the workers two weeks' vacation with pay."

With such rapid growth in organization of automobile mechanics and garage attendants, it will soon be possible for all UAWA members and their friends to have their cars serviced in a union garage. Auto workers are strongly urged to patronize only those garages where the employes wear union buttons. By doing this, they will give great assistance to their brother workers in their efforts to build a strong organization.
