THE CHAPLAINCY TO CONGRESS.
We are gratified to find in the Christian Advocate and Journal the following remarks about seeking the office of chaplain to Congress:
"We do not object to our ministers, officiating in the District of Columbia, accepting the chaplaincy to Congress when it is offered; but we believe there is but one opinion among the members of our church, with respect to the impropriety of ministers of the gospel soliciting or electioneering for the appointment personally, or inducing their friends to do so for them. Its derogatory to their sacred calling. and betrays either a petty cupidity, or a vainglorious desire of distinction, which cannot fail to degrade them in the estimation of all wise and good men."
We trust the press, both political and religious, will condemn the seeking of this office, until it shall cost a man the fairest part of his reputation, to make efforts to be appointed chaplain to either branch of Congress.
