From the Rochester Telegraph
We refer with pride to the proceedings of
the young men. They breathe a good and manly spirit--the yeoman strength, the bone and
marrow of republicanism was out. It was,
notwithstanding the intolerable bad state of
the roads, the largest political meeting ever
held in the county. Mr. Stanton, in introducing the proceedings of the young men at Riga,
vindicated the character and measures of the
Administration, and exposed the hollow pretensions and profligate calumnies of the
Coalition, in a speech both eloquent and convincing, which was received with the warmest
marks of applause. The resolutions and address were carried by acclamation. Active
committees were appointed to diffuse correct information and to rouse up patriotic zeal
throughout the district. The cause of the
country is in good hands. The county of Monroe will give THREE THOUSAND MAJORITY FOR
THE ADMINISTRATION.
The opposition papers are in a great rage
with Mr Adams, because he does not think it
expedient to go to war with the most puissant
Don Pedro, of Brazil. But these gentlemen
seem to forget that the Constitution has not
clothed the President with power to make war
--having reserved that enviable privilege to
congress If, therefore, it is necessary to fight
his Donship, for aggressions for which he has
promised reparation in a pacific way, why does
not Congress declare war, inasmuch as both
Houses claim majorities in opposition to the
administration? If the nation has been injured and insulted so grievously by Brazil, why
do not the Jackson troops in Congress march
forth to the fight? They have assumed the responsibility of the government, why then continue to assail the President for not doing what
he has not the power to do? If we had somebody else for President, probably the Constitution might form no barrier to a warlike crusade, whenever the lovers of "blood and carnage" might desire a banquet
