Full Text

Free Trade Ignorance. It is astonishing what profound ignorance the advocates of free trade or Locofocoism are in upon the subject of trade and commerce. Recently it was stated by Mr. Edmunds, (a leader of the Locofoco party in Halifax county, Va. and a candidate on the Polk Electoral ticket,) that not a barrel of flour was ever sent from Virginia to Boston!

Mr. Edmunds is reputed to be a man of talents and of some information, and yet he is so ignorant of the trade of his own State as not to know that the New England States, and Massachusetts especially, are the greatest consumers of the flour and grain of Virginia. This preposterous assertion of Mr. Edmunds was immediately met by the certificates of millers, merchants, and shippers of Richmond, in which they state the fact that not less than 300,000 to 500,000 bbls. of flour are sent from Virginia to New England, and that 500,000 bushels of Virginia corn are consumed annually by Massachusetts alone. — Balt.
