LIBERIA.—We could wish that Congress at its next session would pass a joint resolution recognizing the Liberian right of sovereignty to the soil, and authorizing the President to use the influence of this Government in procuring a similar recognition from France and other continental European powers.—Such a proceeding would not commit our Government to any embarrassing responsibility on account of the Liberian colonies, while, at the same time, it might have the effect of concentrating the moral force of public opinion throughout Christendom on the side of an infant commonwealth, whose rights have been outraged, notwithstanding its peculiar claims upon the sympathies of mankind.
