Full Text
Massachusetts and the Union.
The Puritan Recorder says: "Whatever may be the privations to come upon us by the dissolution of the Union, we believe that the great mass of our population is fully determined to brave them and bear them, rather than to yield another rood of the national territory to the pollutions of slavery. Our people will not meddle with the subject, except by moral and constitutional means, where the slaveocracy have established their reign. Woe to the Northern statesman, great or small, who shall betray the cause of freedom by surrendering an inch of soil to the power of the oppressor. His political death will be instantaneous, and it will be followed by no resurrection. Let the Union depart rather than suffer slavery to "extend the area" of its abominations. In the event of national dissolution the territories now in dispute between the North and South will be secured to liberty; for the South can then win them only by force of arms—a force in the using of which she would ridiculously fail."
