Former Police Clerk Returned to Mobile

MOBILE, Ala., Oct. 30.-Charles F. Howell, former clerk of the police court of Mobile, who entered a guilty plea in the recent liquor conspiracy case in federal court and who was principal government witness in the big federal liquor conspiracy case against many defendants, was returned to Mobile from Portsmouth, O., Wednesday by two Bodeker agency detectives and docketed at the county jail on seven indictments returned by a circuit court grand jury in July.

Howell faces two charges of forgery and five of embezzlement, growing out of alleged shortages while clerk of the police court. Howell's testimony resulted in the conviction of former Chief of Police P. J. O'Shaughnessy for conspiracy and who is now under two-year sentence.
