Full Text

It is now being freely said by Washington correspondents that it was through Mr. Conkling's influence that Judge Hunt did not resign from the Supreme bench last winter, at the time it was supposed that his resignation was to immediately take place, and when it had been decided by the President to appoint Mr. Edmunds to his place. The reason was, as alleged, that Judge Hunt had been appointed by President Grant at Mr. Conkling's instance. If Judge Hunt was to retire, Mr. Conkling wanted another New York man, and another personal friend. As he could not expect any favors from the Hayes administration, the next best thing he could do was to keep Judge Hunt in, and through his influence therefore, Judge Hunt abandoned his intention of resigning.
