Gov. Wood pardoned out of the State Prison a few days since a boy of 10 years who had shortly before been sent there from Cleveland, for firing the stable of one of the citizens, at the instigation of other boys older in years and crime. Think of a boy only 2 feet 1 inch in height, and 54 lbs weight, a criminal in the State Prison among hundreds of aged and hardened villians, who have run a career of all the crimes in the calendar. He could neither read or write, but he was an "old un" in profanity and could puff a segar with a perfect abandon.
The pardon came from the Executive with commendable propriety. The condemnation of such a criminal could not be censured in the Court but the negligence of the people of Cleveland in not providing a House of Refuge, where all such vagrant boys could be restrained and often reformed, is a matter which cannot be so easily defended.—Cin. Enq.
