Delivered by Rev. Dr. Fiske of Providence,
R. I., Before the Berkeley
Association of Yale University—
Many Yale Students in the Congregation.
Rev. Dr. Fiske, rector of St. Stephen's
church, Providence, R. I., preached before
the Berkeley association of Yale university
at Trinity Episcopal church last evening.
The seats in the center of the church were
reserved for the members of the university
and quite a large number of students were
present.
Dr. Fiske's subject was "The Fear of
God." He spoke in part as follows:
"What is the fear of God? Is it the opposite
of love? No. It is that which is
greater than and goes with love. It is the
reverential love which the child gives to its
father. It is not one of the defects of religion,
but rather the greatest perfection.
Can we suppose that the eye-witnesses of
Jesus Christ as they beheld Him day by
day retained any other impression of Him
than that of the greatest reverence? I am
sure they could not have. One of the
things that trouble humanity at present
is the lack of reverence.
The secularization
of the Sabbath, the great mass of
people who live apart from religion, all
show this. Although reverence is not the
whole duty of man, the lack of it detracts
from submission to authority, from courtesy
and all that pertains to just and
righteous living. And yet so far as they
can, men live entirely irreverent lives.
They live in impudent selfishness. They
are independent men, whom the world is
rather given to admire and
make heroes
of.
They are, many of them, self-made
men. They go along feeling so proud
and impudent and selfish in their own
self-reliance that the only feeling they offer
is condescension when they at times
acknowledge themselves to be on equal
terms with God. It is a differential feeling.
Just think of it! A differential feeling
toward your creator who made you out of
nothing and who can annihilate you in a
moment! A man who does not revere his
creator is not worthy of his origin.
What we want are workers in the field
and to you young men is given the great
privilege of going forth and being a power
in the land."
