Extra Board Lament

(Written for W. A. McLyman, BRTer of Lodge 984, Baltimore, by his good friend and amateur poet, Percy E. Thomas).

They call me when I'm fast asleep,
My time I never call my own.
They rouse me from my slumber deep
By the tingle of the telephone.

I do not hope or dare to make
Plans to take my wife to dine.
For if I do a chance I'll take
There's someone missing down the line.

I'd like to take a fishing trip.
Someday perhaps a hunting go.
And if I chance to take a nip
Some jerk will surely fail to show.

If someday the fates decree
That I can join the heav'nly horde.
I wonder if my name will be
Listed on the extra board.
