Captain Appleton, arrived at Portsmouth, N. H. from Santos, informs that Montevideo is still occupied by about 3000 Brazilian troops; on the 6th, 1500 of them left the city with the intention of proceeding to Conelnes, 7 leagues distant, for cattle; after marching about half way they became so annoyed by the army of observation, consisting of perhaps 250 Guerrillas, that they retreated, bringing one Major prisoner, and 150 oxen and horses, and losing 6 or 7 killed, wounded and missing of their own troops. This is the severest encounter that has taken place at Montevideo in 18 months.
