Tuesday last in the Afternoon the following tragical Affair was acted at the South Part of the Town, a German Woman, noted for selling Cakes, having requested a Neighbour's Child, a Boy of about six Years of Age, to go on an Errand, which after he had done, she took him into her Room, and having fastened the Door, fell to cutting the Child with a very dull Case Knife in a terrible Manner: The Screaming of the Child brought Some of the Neighbours to the House, where they heard the Blows, but could not get to its Assistance till they burst the Window open, and then rescued the Child from her Hands: Altho' the Life of the Child was not taken away; yet it was a most shocking Spectacle, as it was in a Gore of Blood, besides the Wrist being cut, its Head was hack'd all over, many Places of the Skull lay bare, and the Skin and several Parts of the Skull turn'd up as if done with a Hook: What induced the Woman to act such an inhumane Part in such a deliberate Manner, it being judged near 10 Minutes from the first Hearing the Child scream) is uncertain; she being very fond of it, and it is said was not much in Liquor at that Time.
