Extract of a letter from Fort Pitt, dated July 29.
"The Indians daily increase in their Insolence and Threatenings to the inhabitants of the Country hereabouts, and have already robbed them of every Way of Subsistence; they steal their Horses, plunder their Houses, and, threaten themselves; so that there is greater Probability of an Indian War at present, than there has been at any Time since I came to this Post."
Extract of another Letter from the same Place July 23:
"We are now reduced to the Precaution of keeping our Drawbridge always up, and placing a double Centry at the Sally-port, lest we should be surprised; in short, every necessary Step is taken that has the Appearance of being, in the smallest Degree, conducive to the Security of this Garrison, and the Preservation of his Majesty's Subjects."
