Rev. Malcolm S. Taylor Delivers Sermon At Grace Church Home-Coming
The annual home-coming services were resumed at Grace Episcopal Church here last Sunday, and the response was particularly gratifying.
The occasion was marked by a celebration of the Holy Communion at an early service, morning prayer service participated in by four clergymen, with sermon by Rev. Malcolm S. Taylor.
In the afternoon the parish house was the scene of a reception, giving old visiting members and the present resident members of the congregation an opportunity to renew those friendships which have always centered about the old Church.
Both of the services and the affair in the afternoon were well attended.
The practice of holding an annual service was begun by the Rev. George S. Vest in 1927, on the occasion of the first anniversary of the re-consecration of the building. This reconsecration took place immediately after the Church edifice had been completely remodelled under the leadership of the Rev. Mr. Vest.
The services have been called each year since, it was pointed out by the present rector on Sunday, except for a break of one year, 1933. He also expressed the hope that the custom would continue always in the future.
All services Sunday were under the direction of the Rev. Louis Tucker, D. D., present rector of Grace Church. He was assisted by the Rev. Mr. Taylor, who was war-time rector of the Church and who also served in that period as a chaplain with the American forces. The Rev. Mr. Taylor is now in an executive position with the Commission on Evangelism under the National Council of the Episcopal Church. He is located in Washington with offices in the College of Preachers, Washington Cathedral.
Others taking part were the Rev. Carter Page, of Berryville and the Rev. Albert C. Muller, of Columbia, Va.
It was a source of deep regret, noted by one of the speakers at the morning service, that the remaining two former rectors of the Church were unable to attend. These are the Rev. Mr. Vest, now at Alexandria, and the Rev. Vincent C. Franks D. D., of Norfolk.
