Full Text

Sud, Sad.

The Delhi Journal, a Republican paper, of Delaware County, Iowa, was "robed in mourning" on account of the death of John Brown. The editor was in a bad way. He said:

"We robe our columns in mourning this week for the murder of the Hero of Ossawatomie—the Champion of the Down-trodden and Oppressed—John Brown: and for the nation that would permit such a murder to be committed."

And as if that was not sufficient to express what his heart felt, he closed his chapter of lamentations as follows:

"The hangman's horrid work is done—
The hero has resigned his breath,
And Freedom's noblest, truest son
Lies in the calm repose of death.

"The Tyrant's mandate is obeyed;
And sadly we lament the loss
Of one, who by his death has made
'The gallows glorious like the cross.'"

Good God! and is it true? is it possible? that in the nineteenth century—in Republican America—men's blood flows on the scaffold for an idea!

An abstract idea—to take from—to steal—to steal negroes, horses, silver-plate and other valuables, and to take the lives of the owners, in addition!

"Pity 'tis true!"
