Fleet Commander Criticizes Sims
WASHINGTON, April 5.- Vice Admiral Sims' employment of American destroyer forces in European waters during the first year of this country's participation in the war was severely criticized today by Admiral Henry P. Wilson, commander of the Atlantic fleet in testimony before the navy board investigating Admiral Fletcher's removal from the Brest command by Admiral Sims.
Disagreeing with the testimony of Captain Byron C. Long, Sims' aide for operations in London who said Admiral Fletcher's request that destroyers be based on Brest was denied because of a lack of oiling facilities there, Admiral Wilson declared that at the time he succeeded Fletcher facilities at Brest were adequate for "quite a large force."
Admiral Wilson said the five converted yachts which it was testified had been the only force available for outward convoy of transports during Admiral Fletcher's command at Brest, were "worthless for that service."
