Full Text

The Arizona papers, in referring to Governor Frémont, do not mince matters in the least, nor are they careful to keep their allusions to that public functionary within the bounds of a strictly deferential courtesy. The last issue of the Prescott Miner is specially frank in the premises. It says:

We do not believe Frémont at heart has any great love for the ancient Pueblo by the Santa Cruz, but it is the railroad that has so many allurements for the Path-finder, who comes at long intervals and goes out on the next train. Arizona is deserving of a better fate. We ought to have a Governor who would come and live with his subjects, and, with shoulder to the wheel, pull for the advancement of a young but promising country. A Governor who will not enter into small speculations for personal aggrandizement would be desirable. A wide-awake, go-ahead man would suit. Worn-out politicians, classed as old fossils, are of no earthly use to a thrifty, vigorous country; and, above all, an honest man is wanted. We do not propose to stop with Lord Frémont, but we want all the scheming of office-holders, though they come from the ranks of the Nebraska pilgrims, removed, and honorable men put in their places. It is time to act. We do not believe there can be found in this county ten men who would sign a petition for the retention of either the Governor or Secretary. We appeal to the press everywhere to take this subject up and assist a suffering public in ridding themselves of objectionable servants. Gen. Garfield should certainly consult the interests of our Territory and the feelings of our people in the selection of Territorial officials. Better no officials at all than the present festering scabs. Scoot them out.
