First Result of the Men's Demand for the Old Rate of Sixty Cents an Hour.
The 'longshoremen put into operation yesterday their demand for sixty cents an hour for work done on any steamship pier at night. The demand had been decided on at a convention on Sunday before last, and the date set was July 25. Committees notified the steamship companies last week.
The longshoremen worked all day yesterday at thirty cents an hour, the regular rate. In the afternoon a committee of the men employed at each pier called, and said that they would not work at night except at the rate of sixty cents an hour instead of forty-five. The agents said that there would be no work done at night then, at least for the present.
It was expected that the City of Para, at the Pacific Mail Steamship pier, would have to be unloaded by night work, and that the White Star steamer Germanic, billed to sail on Wednesday, would also require night work, but the pier superintendents told the committee that they would try and get along with extra men at day work.
No night work was done last night at any pier. Sixty cents was the rate for night work before the sympathetic strike.
