Full Text

Public Opinion, though sometimes led astray by political demagogues, or hushed by the power of violent political prejudices, is generally sure to become purified, and to repair whatever injustice it may have done, when passion has had time to cool, and the people have had opportunities to deliberate without excitement. Such a change has taken place within a few years, and in so striking a manner as almost to seem like romance to a calm observer. Who that remembers the vituperations, reproaches and slanders that were heaped on the Hartford Convention, a few years ago. and saw the individuals that were members of it treated like outlaws in their native state. could have anticipated a reversal of that sentence of condemnation, within the period of his own personal knowledge? Yet we now see one of its most conspicuous members, Mayor of the city of Boston, and another, hardly less distinguished, President of the Senate A third individual, not indeed a member, condjutor and supporter, is President of Hartford College. Except the Governor and Judges of the Supreme Court, these are the three first offices in the State. Long may they be filled with such distinguished ability.—Boston Cour.
