Comes To Town After His Runaway Wife.
This Afternoon the Police Got Him And His Arsenal Too.
G.W. Patton, of Elizabethtown, Ill., was arrested at J. W. Orr's grocery, Third and Clark streets, at 2:00 o'clock this afternoon on a charge of carrying concealed a pistol by Officer Frank Orr. Thereby hangs a tale.
Yesterday morning a young woman apparently about 25 years of age arrived in the forenoon train over the N., C. & St. L. road and inquired from Transfer Agent Hurley where she could go to escape her husband, from whom she said she had run away only a few hours before, and who would certainly pursue her. She was finally taken to Mr. Orr's residence where she was acquainted, and there told a pitiful story of neglect and cruelty. She said her husband's conduct was such that she could no longer tolerate it, and had left him at Elva, Marshall county, and come to Paducah. She left him once before and he said if she ever did so again he would kill her. She exhibited great fear, and she did not want him to find out anything in regard to her whereabouts. Her fright was such that at any footstep approaching the house she would run into the back room.
Her husband made inquiry at the trains that passed Elva and being unable to ascertain anything came to Paducah himself. He is G. W. Patton, who lives at Elizabethtown, Ill., but has had employed to clear some ground near Elva.
He found out where his fugitive wife had gone and went to Mr. Orr's grocery. Mr. Orr informed him that he should not see the woman, because she was afraid of him. Patton insisted, saying she was his wife. Mr. Orr finally agreed that if the woman consented to an interview he could visit her. She came near fainting when apprised of her husband's presence in the city and flatly refused to see him.
Mr. Orr reported this to Patton after dinner and the latter left, after finding out the number of Mr. Orr's residence on Tennessee street. Mr. Orr was powerless to stop him, but sent a messenger to notify Officer Frank Orr, who lives near by.
Patton stopped in front of the house and agreed to leave his pistol on the outside. He removed it from his pocket and laid it aside. His wife then agreed to talk to him if he would permit a boy present to search him, and then have the boy stand between them. He agreed. A knife was found, and the boy stood between them after the pistol and knife were disposed of.
About this time Officer Orr arrived and took charge of the husband, pistol, knife and all. Patton was carried to the city hall, and at press time a warrant was being issued. He is a desperate looking character.
