Full Text

Judge Dixon an Independent Candidate.

It will be seen by the calls and response which we publish elsewhere that Chief Justice Dixon is an independent candidate for election to the position he is now holding.

Personally, we have the highest respect for the integrity of character, and the judicial independence and impartiality of Judge Dixon. Since he has been upon the bench of the Supreme Court, we have been so circumstanced as to meet him almost daily. and have learned to esteem him, not only as a Judge, but as a man.

Our view of the duty of Republicans, however, have been already expressed, and we regret that Judge Dixon and the Republicans who join in calling upon him to be a candidate cannot concur in acquiescing in the determination of the State Convention. Under existing circumstances. we think that the Republicans of the State should not allow themselves to be divided, but should rise above all personal preferences, and give their united suffrages for Judge Spooner.—State Journal.
