LONDON, Sept. 21.

On Thursday the 6th inst. the following melancholy accident is said to have happened near Moivane, in the county of Kerry, Ireland; two men having gone into the river Gde to swim, one of them suddenly disappeared; his companion, missing him, alarmed the people in the neighbourhood, & after a diligent search, the body was found with a monstrous eel wound many folds about his neck, and biting at his throat! So exceedingly fierce and voracious was this dreadful animal, that before it could be separated from the neck of the unfortunate man, its head was obliged to be severed from its body. Its length was five feet and half, and weighed 56 lb.

De Foe seems, in the following two lines in his Jure Divino, to have parodied the old proverb of God sends meat, but the Devil sends cooks.

Our Governments from Heaven might first appear,
But Governors come from, the Lord knows where.
