It is unfortunate that we cannot celebrate more fittingly the birthday of Abraham Lincoln, one of the greatest men in the history of the United States. We can, however, at least read over his life and perhaps better our own by so doing.
Many of us give up too easily and think that we can never make a name for ourselves simply because our financial condition is not the best. Lincoln did not become discouraged even though all odds seemed to be against him. When he was about the age of most of us, he had only what little education that could be gained from a small backwoods school and what few books he had or could borrow from friends or neighbors. He was a failure at the first professions which he took up, but even then he did not give up hope and consequently became one of our greatest heroes.
So taking this man, whose entire life was devoted to the good of his fellow men, as an example, let's try to continue our school work and become, at least, good citizens of the United States.
—Elizabeth McLaughlin.
