Full Text

Extract of a letter from Kingston, Jamaica, dated July 17, 1796.

"His Majesty's ship Alfred, of 74 guns, bro't in here yesterday a French republican frigate of 44 guns, and 250 men, called the Renemie, taken off Altavella. She is a fine new ship and remarkable fast sailer. She was taken in consequence of her supposing the Alfred to be an East-Indiaman, with troops, as the Alfred's guns were housed, when first she got sight of her. Mon. gave chase and came down boldly until she was well within gun shot, when the Alfred luffed round, and gave her such a dose, as astonished Monf. and fully convinced him that he had got a Scotch prize."

Event Details

HMS Alfred brought the captured French republican frigate Renemie, a fine new 44-gun ship with 250 men, into Kingston yesterday after taking it off Altavella. The capture occurred because the French mistook the Alfred, with guns housed, for an East Indiaman with troops, chased it closely, and was surprised by a broadside when within gunshot.
