NEEDY INDIAN TOTS IN CAMP

WPA OPERATING HEALTH UNIT FOR UNDERPRIVILEGED CHILDREN

Accommodates 100 Youngsters at Time In Two Separate Sessions of Five Weeks Each; Has Opened for Sixth Consecutive Year.

Opening for the sixth consecutive year, Blue Bay camp for underprivileged Indian children is operating again this summer under WPA supervision. The camp, located on the east shore of Flathead lake, will accommodate 100 children from 7 to 12 years of age in two separate sessions of five weeks each.

'The program is designed to provide health, care and recreational training in order to build up physically Indian children who would otherwise roam the reservation until school opens in the fall,' L. W. Shotwell, reservation superintendent, said. 'On the basis of past experience an average gain in weight of five pounds per child may be expected in a five-week period.'

The camp will be under the general supervision of Stanley Schultz, with Mrs. Schultz acting as girls' adviser. John Mohl will be boys' adviser. In addition, the agency doctor and nurse will give weekly health examinations and a matron will be employed to care for small children.

Developed by the Indian service through WPA, the health camp now has almost 20 buildings including a kitchen and dining hall, recreation hall, girls' dormitory and 'administration building, bathhouse and laundry, boys' bathhouse, two boys' barracks and cabins for boys and employees. A pressure water and irrigation system also has been installed.

A truck garden is maintained in connection with the camp to provide fresh vegetables for the children.
