Splendid Progress in the Pecos Region-Heavy Land Sales-Extension of the Railroad.
Gov. Thornton, who has just returned with his family from Roswell, says that the Roswell celebration was a great success in every way, there being no less than 3,000 people present. He says that that section of the territory is making magnificent progress and is every day receiving new settlers of the most substantial class. During the time he was in Roswell there were 1,100 acres sold in the vicinity for farming purposes, the amount paid for the land aggregating $65,000. Within a few weeks Stark Bros., nursery men, of Louisiana, Mo., and President Earle, of the horticultural society of the United States, will set out 1,000 acres in apples in the old Chisum farm near Roswell. The governor says that from information gained while in the Pecos valley it seems certain that the railroad will be immediately completed from Roswell north via White Oaks in case the people of the territory indicate by their votes next month that they favor New Mexico's admission as a state.
The people of the Pecos valley are pushing forward to the front with great strides and the future of this favored region looks indeed bright.
