American Independence.
Yesterday, the periodical anniversary when the enlightened Patriots and Statesmen of our country, declared the then Colonies of America, Sovereign and independent States, was celebrated with accumulated splendor and festivity. In this, and the adjacent towns, and we trust every where from whence we shall hear, there appeared a spirit determined that the United States should be as Independent in reality from all foreign influence and power, as she was in name. Every demonstration of joy welcomed the Aurora of the day-nor ceased until the shades of night prevailed.---The artillery of several companies in this and the neighboring towns gave the signal to the bells to reiterate the welcome. and continued it at intervals thro' the day. Five military corps paraded. The new raised corps of cavalry, commanded by Capt. Amory, in a very handsome United States uniform, escorted His Excellency the Commander in Chief, from his seat at Roxbury, to the Council Chamber : Where a procession being formed, the Independent Cadets, commanded by Col. May, took up the escort, and proceeded to the Old Brick Meeting-houfe-where John Callender, Esq. pronounced a judicious, appropriate and spirited Oration--in which, after doing justice to the piety, patriotism and enlightened policy of our illustrious Ancestors ;-after marking the progress of British oppression in our country, and its effect on the minds of Americans in eradicating ancient loyalty and affections, and inducing them to seek relief therefrom in Independence :- after contemplating the pre-eminent talents & virtues of the Patriots who gave existence to the immortal Declaration of '76 ; and the great principles in which it was founded--and recognizing, in the most feeling manner, the unrivalled wisdom and services of a Washington, the Adams's and many other Heroes and Statesmen--he took an ample review of the present situation of the United States as it respected the French Republic--deprecated the evil tendency of foreign influence in our country ; and conjured his countrymen by the price they set on their Freedom and Independence ; to swear to transmit them unimpaired to posterity. It is impossible in a paragraph to do justice to this display of American principles ; and their effect on the minds of a crowded auditory, was evidenced by the most enthusiastic applauses. These civic testimonials being closed the military renewed the escorts of the morning ; and after a handsome discharge of their duty as soldier-citizens, they retired to refreshment. The Cavalry dining at Watertown--the Independent Cadets at Mr. Bowen's hall-the Independent Fusiliers at Charlestown--and Capt. Roulstone's company of the 1st Regiment at Cambridge. The military evolutions and firing, of cavalry, artillery and infantry, afforded pleasing satisfaction. The Society of the Cincinnati, agreeably to annual custom, met at Concert-Hall, to transact the usual business of the Society ; and to recognize the friendship founded during eight years of peril and sufferings.--Their feast was truly fraternal, and their federalism undiminished. The toasts given at the various festive boards, we could not procure in season for this day. The following are among the toasts drank by Capt. Roulstone's company. "1. Our Country's Birthday. We celebrate it as Freemen, who are never unmindful of the Congress of '76.--2, The President of the Union-May the blessings of Heaven and gratitude of his country accompany his administration,-3. The Vice-President, and the several branches of the Federal Government-- May they unite in supporting with dignity, the Independence of our country, and convince the world that Americans will be really free. 4. The enlightened and patriotic Governor of Massachusetts--Long may he grace the chair of Magistracy, & prove to the world, that His Excellency is not merely nominal. 5. Our worthy Lieutenant-Governor-May the name of Gill, be remembered while Benevolence is a Virtue.--6.
The militia--May they with alertness, attend the roll call of duty and honor-7. The late President of the United States, WASHINGTON =a name that contains every thing good and great.
At Charlestown, an Oration, replete with information and sound principles, was delivered by John Miller Russell, Esq. and the artillery of the town, announced the festivity of the inhabitants.
