Full Text
An unhappy occurrence took place at Fort Adams on Sunday evening last, about 10 o'clock. Two young men, by the name of William Cornell and William Kane, both soldiers on guard, had a slight quarrel, which, it seems, grew out of mere sport, when the former discharged his musket at the latter, the contents of which entered his body just above his hip, which caused his death in a few minutes after. A jury of inquest was summoned on the following day, who, after a careful investigation, brought in a verdict of wilful murder. Cornell was immediately given up to the civil authority, and is now in prison to await his trial. We forbear making any remarks on the case of this unhappy youth, whose age, we understand, does not exceed seventeen, as we are unwilling to prejudice the public mind: he is in the hands of justice, and will doubtless have a fair and impartial trial.
