Chattanooga, Aug. 5.—General Lee was greeted with applause by the G.A.R. at Chattanooga. The general, barely equipped but resolute with patience, a historian and plain eyewitness of facts, reviewed the country's history from the Civil War to the greatest crisis.

In asking if the outraged general is harassed by being asked his age, a very curious query, he went on to bed because he did not know whether to vote take or is by Russia or elsewhere. He denied that on the day when he looked over the bay and saw the Maine sweeping into the bay with the American flag afloat and Americans behind the guns, it was a pleasant sight.

Discussing the explosion, General Lee declared he is not less the spirited authorities and any more to do with it than he did. He attributed the blowing up of the Maine to some young hot-headed Spaniard at the wireless station.

He told how he called out to Capt. Sigsbee after the explosion and of the madness of refugees by them to these rescuing steamers. He made his statement the same as Capt. Sigsbee's with the utmost vigor, so that he (Lee) recommended that the president send a fleet and quick. He said he got the first part of the message out, however, before sending on the advice of Captain Sigsbee. He added,

"I'm afraid I was feeling a little shaky about that time."

Gen. Lee characterized General Grant as a greater soldier than Napoleon. At the conclusion of his speech he was given three cheers.
