Full Text

The Washington correspondent of the Cincinnati Commercial wanted something sensational, in a political way, for his journal. So, last week, he manufactured an interview with Senator Richard Coke, and wired it westward. The alleged burden of the Texas senator's talk was that the democratic party in Texas was going to pieces of its own weight; that the press and people of the state were breaking loose from party ties and joining the independent movement. Those who know Senator Coke can readily imagine the indignation that filled his soul when the paper containing this "interview" was shown him. He promptly denounced it, saying: "I never heard of the interview until now it is false from beginning to end. I have not had an interview upon any subject with any newspaper representative and moreover have never expressed such sentiments and opinions as this so-called interview imputes to me. My candid opinion is, the independent movement in Texas will be defeated by 75,000 majority."

Elsewhere in this morning's EXAMINER we present the "interview" in full, as it appeared in the Commercial. The sentiments expressed are not such as Senator Coke would give utterance to. He believes in Democracy and its impregnability as firmly as he does in the inspiration and logic of Holy Writ, and we can only account for the mendacious statements of the Commercial correspondent on the grounds of innate wickedness "pure cussedness," if we may use a term more forcible than elegant-or perhaps a douceur from the political demoralization fund at Washington.
