THE EARTHQUAKE.

NEW PORT, Sept. 18.—The Earthquake which was felt in this town on the 6th inst. was also noticed in Little Compton, Westport and at New Bedford.....The New Bedford Mercury of the 10th inst. says,—

It commenced with an explosion, like that of a heavy cannon, and was immediately succeeded by a loud rumbling noise, which lasted from one to two minutes, during which time the buildings continued to tremble, so that some persons were much alarmed. Its effect on the water was more extraordinary than on the land. We learn from persons who were on watch on board a sloop in the harbor, that previous to the shock the water was perfectly calm, but was suddenly agitated, as if it had been a violent storm.
