GRUESOME FIND
A Skeleton Disinterred on Douglas Island 14 Feet Underground.
In excavating a trench for the pipe line which is being extended across Douglas island, a skeleton was disinterred fourteen feet underground. The skull was brought to the sheriff's office today by Mr. Brown. The skull would indicate that the individual was a negro.
There was a chain fastened to the neck and to the ankle. The bones are in a good state of preservation.
Near the bones was a piece of fence. The various strata of earth show that from the piece of fence there has been a gradual filling until the present level of fourteen feet is reached. The individual may have been drowned, and perhaps he was a prisoner trying to escape. He may have stepped overboard from a steamboat. or he may have been lost. However, it is all a mystery of forty years ago, and may ever be a mystery.
