Sodium Chlorate Used to Eradicate the Thistle

Sodium Chlorate is being used by a large number of farmers in the Red River Valley for the purpose of eradicating small patches of quack, sow thistle, and other dangerous weeds. While the use of this chemical is not practical on a large scale, it is very useful for eradicating small patches of thistles which are just getting a start.

Sodium Chlorate is sold in a crystalline form similar to common salt. It is dissolved in water at the rate of one pound per gallon of water and sprayed at the rate of one and one-half gallons per square rod. A second and third application may be necessary if the weeds make a new growth. The best method to use in applying this material is by the use of a power sprayer.

Sodium chlorate is poisonous to cattle if taken in too large quantities, hence it is best to keep cattle away from pastures where it has been applied until the rain has washed it off. It is also easily ignited if the clothing becomes saturated and sufficient friction takes place. It should not be allowed to come in contact with any material containing sulphur because when mixed with sulphur it is somewhat explosive.

It may be applied at any time during the summer months on ground that is being summer fallowed, but should not be applied on crop land until after harvest due to the fact that it kills all plants with which it comes in contact. It has no effect on plants grown on land the year after it is applied.

The Bagley Co-operative Company has some of this material on hand for farmers who wish to try it out this summer.
