Saves Nickel: Life Endangered.

A desire to save five cents to spend for beer came near costing Joe Stulir, a Bohemian, his life at 1:45 yesterday afternoon, when he failed in an attempt to board a westbound Rock Island freight train in East Moline.

Stulir told a friend that he was going to Moline and that he would save his money for beer by beating his way on a freight train that was passing. He attempted to board the train near the Rock Island passenger station, but he missed his hold and was thrown to the ground. Boxes on the wheel axles of a car cut two bad gashes in his head and bruised his left hip.

Trainmen saw the man fall and the train was brought to a stop. The train proceeded on its way when it was learned that Stulir was not dangerously hurt. The injured man was given medical attention. Later he was removed to his boarding house on Fourteenth street.

Stulir is 33 years old and his home is in Pekin. He has been working for the Hardin company, contracting firm that is laying sewers in East Moline.
