New Course at University Farm
A horticultural and nursery training course has been added to the curriculum of the School of Agriculture at University Farm and will be offered to students for the first time at the new school year opening Oct. 2.
Such subjects as farm horticulture, agricultural botany, floriculture, commercial vegetable gardening, greenhouse construction and management, landscape gardening, seed testing, nursery seeds and seeding, insect pests of plants, and small fruit growing, besides the regular farm studies, will be included in the new course which will run for three years.
Three qualifications, besides good character, are required of boys for entry to the school. They must be at least 17 years of age, must have finished eighth grade work, and have practical farm experience of at least six months.
The girls also must have completed their grade studies and be 17 years of age.
Large sums are being spent in remodeling the dormitories for use of school students at University Farm. Pendergast hall will be thoroughly modernized, and rooms formerly used for hospital purposes in the boys' new dormitory will be remodeled and converted into living rooms. The heating and ventilating systems of the girls' dormitories have been materially improved, and all rooms thoroughly renovated with new plaster and paint.
Work is well advanced in remodeling the Old Home building which hereafter will be used for hospital purposes. The music department will be transferred to the Soik building, which will be divided into practice rooms and class rooms.
Mrs. Mary Coffin Ford of Minneapolis, who several years ago was connected with the school, will be in charge of vocal instruction the coming year.
