The Republic will be Saved.
The intelligence daily brought by telegraph from all parts North, is of the most encouraging and hopeful character. In an instant as it were, at the flash of the lightning over the wires, announcing the attack upon Fort Sumter by the rebels, the North, the glorious, the loyal, the patriotic North to a man apparently, without distinction of party, rises up in sublime unanimity, in support of the government in this the hour of its peril. From the pine forests on the Penobscot, to the far off turbid waters of the Missouri, but one voice is heard, but one purpose expressed, and that is, to defend, to sustain, by men, by money, the Union of the States. In less than one short week, from the bosom of peaceful communities, has sprung an army of 75,000 men, armed, equipped and marshalled for the fray, with a reserve of half a million or more ready to follow when the call of duty shall summon more to the field.
The Republic will be preserved. It cannot be otherwise. The spectacle presented to day, assures it. Twenty millions of men, brave, accustomed to labor, hardship and exposure, possessed of personal character and habits of independence and self reliance, with resources and wealth, and fighting for the glorious stars and stripes and the principles of free government, are invincible. They must and will triumph.
The die is cast. We are hopeful, confident: We did fear at one time. We feared that politics might neutralize patriotism. But since we see men of all parties in sublime indifference to the past, in view of the dangers of the present, forgetting old antagonisms, and ranging themselves shoulder to shoulder under the old flag, and pledging renewedly "their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor," to the country, we can no longer despair of the Republic.
