A London paper of Jan. 1, remarks:—The news from Warsaw and from St. Petersburg is considered decisive in the city as to the determination of the Poles to attempt the establishment of their independence, as well as to the Russians being also determined to resist such an attempt. The general opinion appears to be, that the Russians will bring such an overwhelming power into the field as at once to crush the Poles; but no one calculates that the Emperor will be able to effect any thing of importance before the spring. It should be recollected, however, that between this and April or May there are several months to elapse, which will no doubt, be well employed by the Polish Government in making arrangements to meet the enemy. The policy of Russia should be to strike while the iron is hot, but it is difficult to keep it so during a northern winter. In the spring, the probability is that the Poles will not only be ready for the Russians but also to beat them. Besides, Russia, in acknowledging the independence of Belgium, has set a "bad example," with regard to Poland, which cannot fail to operate in her favor. It should be borne in mind that the Poles have not much to fear from Prussia and Austria; the former will probably find more than enough to do in keeping down her Rhenish Provinces, and the latter quite as much in retaining her Italian Sovereignty.

News indicates Poles determined to establish independence and Russians determined to resist. General opinion: Russians will crush Poles quickly but not before spring. Poles will use winter months to prepare. Russia's acknowledgment of Belgian independence sets bad example for Poland.
