Full Text

LONDON, August 7.

A few Days ago, Three Prisoners in the Conciergerie at Paris were condemned, and ordered to be executed; but one of them dying the Night before the Execution, and being put into a Coffin, one of the others found Means to convey away the Body, and laid himself in its Place: and leaving a breathing Place, fastened it slightly down; so that at Midnight, when the Goalers thought to carry out the Body in order to Interment, the Fellow no sooner found himself without the Walls of the Prison, than he began to make a Noise, and so frighted the Bearers, that they threw the Coffin off their Shoulders, and ran away, which gave him an Opportunity he wanted, to open the Lid and make his Escape.

Event Details

Three prisoners in the Conciergerie at Paris were condemned to execution. One died the night before and was placed in a coffin. Another prisoner removed the body, took its place in the coffin, leaving a breathing hole and fastening the lid lightly. At midnight, as jailers carried the coffin out for burial, the prisoner made noise outside the prison walls, frightening the bearers who dropped it and fled, allowing him to open the lid and escape.
