NEW YORK Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe the dynamic West African leader and Premier of Eastern Nigeria, will address the closing session of the 50th annual convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People here at the Polo Grounds, Sunday afternoon, July 19. The week-long convention opens July 13 at the New York Coliseum.
Others programmed for the huge rally in the Polo Grounds include NAACP Executive Secretary Roy Wilkins; Jackie Robinson, former Star Dodger infielder; Dr. Eugene Carson Blake of the National Council of Churches of Christ; and Rabbi Max Davidson, president of the Synagogue Council of America.
Mahalia Jackson, the famed gospel singer, will participate. There will also be music by the combined choirs of Greater New York and vicinity under direction of Coleridge Taylor Perkinson and by the Charles Dickens Fife, Drum and Bugle Corps of Yonkers, N. Y.
Educated at Howard; Lincoln and Pennsylvania universities, Dr. Azikiwe returned to his native land where he founded the continent's largest all-African political party established a chain of newspapers, became a banker, and plunged into politics emerging, in the words of John Gunther, as "the best known and most powerful Nigerian".
