Vacation Plans

I cannot take long, leisurely vacations
In the green peace of some high mountain crest,

But I can give my often voiced vexations
A long-delayed and greatly needed rest.

I cannot take a trip to some far shore
But I can give complaints a holiday;

And settle criticisms, by the score,
I'm packing up and sending far away.

The habits of being anxious, and of doubting,
And making tart remarks that need amends,

I'm going to give a long and peaceful outing
All summer long. and when the summer ends

I shall be glad, indeed, if they should shirk
The woeful task of going back to work.

—Jane Merchant, in the Quiet Hour.
