After despoiling the king of Prussia (who is pitied by nobody) of the greater part of his dominions, N'Apollyon levied an extraordinary contribution of some millions on the wretched monarch, who it seems was unable to pay it. But as N'Apollyon "wants money and must have it," the Prussian king was directed to borrow it of the Dutch. The cunning Dutchmen smoked the trick, and declined making the loan, alleging that they did not know how soon N'Apollyon might seize the remainder of the Prussian territory. But it was resolved not to let the Mynheers get off thus. A very curious diplomatic farce is acted, in which N'Apollyon's minister tells the king of Prussia's minister that to remove all scruples from the minds of the Dutch, his master N'Ap. guarantees the integrity of what is left of the Prussian dominions, and that the Mynheers cannot, after this, refuse him the money. The poor Dutchmen are still dissatisfied, knowing the exact value of French promises; but they are per force obliged to submit to this new method of shearing the sheep.
The diplomatic farce alluded to above is almost equal to the one played off at Paris, in divorcing Josephine.- Ibid.
