Full Text
At a town-meeting holden at Bristol, on Monday last, we learn that a committee of five persons was appointed to purchase an estate suitable for a house to accommodate the poor, and that a sum not exceeding $5000 was appropriated to defray the expense. The meeting was called for this special purpose; and we are happy to observe, that the utility of these institutions for the support and employment of the poor is becoming so apparent, that they will probably be adopted in all towns where pauperism materially augments the municipal expenses. The alacrity with which the inhabitants of Bristol have commenced this system of internal improvement is creditable to the place, and a happy presage of its ultimate success; and it is hoped that it will stimulate our citizens, on Monday next, to act with decision upon the report of the Committee appointed at a late meeting to enquire into the expediency of a similar establishment for the town of Providence.—Providence Gaz.
