EDITORIAL
The East Clevelander for more than thirty weeks has been serving the city with news. It has brought to public attention a greater number of vitally interesting public issues—it has helped to defeat an iniquitous franchise: it has printed heretofore hidden activities in city and school government; it has told nothing but the truth, played fair all along the line.
The result is that the East Clevelander is read by every one. It has the respect and confidence of a large majority of the people. They are smart enough to know a good thing when they see it.
The East Clevelander has been FOUGHT EVERY STEP OF THE WAY by those higher up whose own selfish motives have actuated them.
The paper was first approached with a view to bribery of paying us to quit or to go over to the other side. Then pressure was brought to bear upon potential advertisers, and timid business men were induced to stay out or to come out after they were once in. There is no secret about this—it has been openly admitted to us.
We have been opposed, threatened, harassed at every turn.
Sure of our own intentions and of the loyal support of the readers, we have gone about our business of getting out a good paper and of helping to fight the people's battles for them.
Now we are asking you to express your appreciation of our efforts in a practical way. We want every woman and every man who reads this paper to SUPPORT US BY SUPPORTING OUR ADVERTISERS.
If the paper is to continue in its fight for the people, it will be because you SHOW US THAT YOU WANT US. And you can best do that by telling your merchants that YOU WILL DO YOUR BUYING FROM THE ONES WHO ADVERTISE THEIR GOODS IN THE EAST CLEVELANDER!
Let them know by telephone and in person that you mean what you say you will buy from the advertisers in this paper, and YOU WILL EXPECT TO SEE THEIR ADS IN ITS PAGES.
If you hear some one declare slightingly that the paper is "radical," don't argue. The answer to that is, the PAPER IS READ and for that reason is the BEST POSSIBLE ADVERTISING MEDIUM.
Folks, it's up to you.
